Providing Tracheostomy Care

Secretions tend to build up within the tracheostomy tube and around the site, potentially causing impaired air movement, respiratory distress, and/or infection. The accumulation of secretions is best managed by periodic cleaning of the tracheostomy cannula and site care. Do not forget that sterile technique is required whenever tracheostomy care is conducted. The policies and procedures of your facility, the physician's orders, and your nursing judgment determine how often these procedures are performed.
