Administering Oxygen via an Oxygen Mask

When a client requires a concentration of oxygen higher than 44%, an oxygen mask is used. Several different types of masks exist. Familiarize yourself with each mask, how each mask works, how much oxygen concentration can be delivered, and the guidelines for use. When using a mask, remember the following:

  • The mask should fit snugly around the client's face. If it is loose, it will not effectively deliver the right amount of oxygen.
  • Clients are not able to eat when wearing a mask. There may be a separate order for oxygen via nasal cannula during meals to help manage this situation. Since the amount of oxygen being delivered via the cannula will be less than that of the mask, return the client to the mask immediately after his meal.
  • Skin integrity can be compromised due to pressure and moisture under the mask. Regular assessment of the area under the mask is an important part of care.
