Oxygenation: Respiratory : Providing Supplemental Oxygenation

Administering Oxygen via a Nasal Cannula

Depending on your client's condition and status, it might be necessary to provide supplemental oxygen. Oxygen delivery is measured in liters per minute (LPM). A nasal cannula is used to administer a flow rate of up to 6 LPM. This rate will yield an approximate 44% inspired oxygen concentration to the client. A nasal cannula does not interfere with the client's ability to talk or eat and is generally well tolerated by the client. Remember, oxygen flow in excess of 6 LPM through a nasal cannula will not effectively increase the amount of oxygen that the client receives.
