Teaching Splinting and Coughing

Coughing helps to remove retained mucus from the respiratory tract. Coughing is usually taught along with deep breathing exercises. Coughing is often painful if the client has a chest or abdominal incision. Teach the client how to properly "splint" the incision while coughing.
